What Is Post Cycle Therapy (PCT)?
Post Cycle Therapy, or PCT, refers to a protocol of medications and supplements used after a cycle of performance enhancing compounds to help the body restore its natural hormone production. When you use exogenous hormones or compounds that affect your endocrine system — such as testosterone, anabolic steroids, prohormones, or certain SARMs — your body may reduce or shut down its own natural production of testosterone and other hormones.
PCT is designed to kickstart your body back into natural production, minimize the side effects of coming off cycle, preserve the muscle gains you made during your cycle, and restore hormonal balance as quickly as possible.
Why Is PCT So Important?
Skipping PCT after a cycle is one of the most common and costly mistakes in the performance enhancement world. Without proper PCT, you risk losing a significant portion of your gains as testosterone levels crash, experiencing symptoms of low testosterone (fatigue, depression, loss of libido, brain fog), elevated estrogen levels leading to gynecomastia and water retention, prolonged recovery that can take months instead of weeks, and potential long-term damage to your endocrine system.
Simply put — if you are serious enough to run a cycle, you should be serious enough to run a proper PCT afterward.
Common PCT Compounds
Nolvadex (Tamoxifen)
Nolvadex is the most widely used PCT compound. It is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) that blocks estrogen at the receptor level while stimulating the release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. This triggers the testes to resume natural testosterone production. Typical PCT dosing starts at 40mg/day for the first two weeks, then 20mg/day for weeks three and four.
Clomid (Clomiphene)
Clomid is another SERM commonly used in PCT protocols. It works similarly to Nolvadex by stimulating LH and FSH release, but through a slightly different mechanism. Some users prefer Clomid for heavier cycles, while others find it causes more side effects (mood swings, visual disturbances) at higher doses. It is often used at 50mg/day for 4 weeks, or combined with Nolvadex for a more robust recovery.
Aromasin (Exemestane)
Aromasin is an Aromatase Inhibitor (AI) that reduces the conversion of testosterone into estrogen. While not a primary PCT compound on its own, it is often used alongside Nolvadex or Clomid to control estrogen levels during the transition off cycle. This helps prevent estrogen rebound and reduces the risk of gynecomastia.
HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)
HCG mimics Luteinizing Hormone and directly stimulates the testes to produce testosterone. It is typically used in the weeks leading up to PCT (a “bridge” between cycle and PCT) to prevent testicular atrophy and make the transition smoother. HCG is not used as a standalone PCT but is a valuable addition to a comprehensive recovery protocol.
When Do You Need PCT?
PCT is recommended after any cycle that involves compounds known to suppress natural testosterone production. This includes anabolic steroids (testosterone, Deca, Trenbolone, etc.), prohormones, suppressive SARMs (RAD-140, LGD-4033, S-23), and extended HGH or peptide protocols that may affect the HPT axis.
Non-suppressive compounds like Cardarine (GW-501516), Ostarine at low doses, and most peptides generally do not require PCT — but it is always wise to get blood work done to confirm.
